EVANA

Like most women, I grew up with the societal pressure to conform, to be silent, and to be “respectable.” As a lively young dancer and later as a teenager discovering her bisexuality, I was frequently encased in a cocoon of judgments and whispered criticisms. As I entered adulthood, burlesque quickly became my sanctuary and my rebellion. I have now built a career and a successful brand entirely focused on unapologetically showcasing my vibrant femininity.

I REFUSE TO DILUTE MY AUTHENTICITY

To me, being fearlessly feminine goes beyond mere appearances and societal validations. It means being unreservedly myself; refusing to dilute my authenticity to make others comfortable. My journey through the world of burlesque has taught me that fearlessness and femininity thrive together, and this is something that I pass on to all of my beginner burlesque dance students.

LOOKING TO LEGENDS WHO BLAZED THE TRAIL

I find dance and movement the most potent way to connect with my body and inner femininity. Listening to my body, channelling my emotions into performance, and feeling myself move all help remind me of the strong woman that I am. I also find so much power in researching the history of all the powerful women who came before us. Looking at the legends and icons that graced the stages before me helps me feel like I am not alone in my feminine journey.

BALANCING BUSINESS WHILE KEEPING THAT FEMININE FLAME ABLAZE WITH ALWAYS BE A TIGHTROPE WALK

It can still be hard to stay attuned to my feminine, nurturing side while balancing the demands of running a business. I think it will always be a tightrope walk. In a business realm that often champions masculine energy, it’s important to preach and practice the indispensable act of carving out time for oneself. I find it so important to actively practice self-care and self-love - indulge in simple feel-good activities like getting a mani-pedi or organising a cozy girls’ night. Even lighting a few candles and having a bubble bath can keep that feminine flame ablaze.
What I’ve learnt, and the message I hope to share with others, is to be patient and believe in yourself. Good things take time, and hard work always pays off.
